Yes, solar panels are still very expensive, and by many standards, not very efficient. Even so, solar power is one of the cleanest sources of free energy available on the planet. There are other sources like wind, hydroelectric, and even the emerging magnetic generator field, but cheap solar panels are one of the simplest to use for home power generation.

Did you know you can buy solar cells on ebay and from wholesale sources for a fraction of the cost of brand new, already assembled panels? The newer, more efficient cells can produce .5 volts at 4.5 amps, which is 2.25 watts per individual cell. If you build a panel with 36 cells wired in series, that would be an 18 volt panel at 4.5 amps, which gives you an 80 watt panel at peak sunlight. The cells are the most expensive part, so it is possible to build each panel for around $100, plus or minus a few bucks.

The reason solar cells can be purchased for so little is that many of them are factory rejects. However, they are not rejected because they don’t work, but because they may have cracks and chips in them. There are also many variations of cells, such as size, tabbed wiring, or not tabbed, differing current outputs and more.

When building your own cheap solar panels, it is important to use the same size for all your individual solar cells. Different size cells produce different amounts of current, and since the cells are wired in series, the smallest current cell will be the limiting factor, which prevents you from taking full advantage of the power the larger cells produce. It is analogous to assembling a pipline with many indvidual pipe sections, but if one of the pipe sections has a smaller diameter, it will restrict the overall flow rate through the pipeline.

Tabbed solar cells are preferable to minimize the amount of soldering required when connecting multiple cells. These are simply flat conductors that are already connected to the plus and minus polarities of each cell, making it easier to work with.

Sometimes, solar cell lots are dipped in wax to protect them during shipping. If possible, try to have them shipped without being dipped in wax. It is a fairly cumbersome task to heat the cells and remove the wax once they are received. They may sustain a few chips in shipping, but as long as they still work, that is what is important.
