What comes to mind when you see the term Wind Power Kits?

Do you envision a wind generator farm with dozens of generators? Perhaps you think of a single home built unit that is mounted on a small pole near someones house.

Wind generators come in many sizes and price tags. Commercial units will cost several thousand dollars each and are not economically viable for most home owners. Some home built kits can be purchased for as little as $350 to $500 and produce anywhere from 300watts to 1000watts, depending on design and wind speed. Still yet, there are many guides available that will show you how to build your own wind generator with basic tools and materials for as little as $100. These units can produce significant power at a price tag that makes them a very attractive solution for home owners wanting to offset or replace their electric utility bill.

Most home built wind turbines will start turning in winds between 5-7 mph. Before considering whether you want to purchase or build your own unit, it would be a good idea to get a cheap anemometer on ebay for testing wind speed on your property. If you live in the US, you can also do a quick check of your area using the Department of Energy Wind Resource Map.

Even a small increase in wind speed can significantly raise the output power of a wind generator. This is because the power production is cubed with just a doubling of wind speed. A similar result is obtained with design changes, such as blade length. Of course, the more efficient the motor used, the better the generator performance. You should use a DC motor that is rated for high voltage and high current at low RPMs. One that would easily produce 12 volts DC at low RPM and enough current to charge your batteries.

Wind power kits for homes are made up of the following basic components:

  • DC motor generator
  • wind propeller blades
  • body and tail
  • small tower for mounting
  • charge controller
  • batteries
  • DC to AC Inverter

Most of these items can be found for very low cost, and in some cases, even free. A basic home build wind power kit can be assembled for around $100 in parts and completed over two weekends.

Fortunately, you don’t have to guess at all the factors that go into building your own wind generator or wind power kit. There are folks who live completely off the grid, and do so as a result of building their own wind power generators and solar panels for very low cost. You can just follow along in their guide as they show you step by step how to do it yourself.
